Why upgrade to toughened safety glass? (the science of safety)

bespoke glass cutting

Why do we recommend toughened glass? To keep your home safe. Standard float (annealed) glass is far more vulnerable to knocks. Upgrading to a toughened material has three main advantages:

x5 times stronger
Toughened safety glass is put through a heat-treatment process that makes it around four to five times stronger than float glass of the same thickness.

That means it can take impacts that would typically crack ordinary glass – ideal for busy kitchens or bathrooms where accidents happen.

Thermal resistance
Annealed glass is surprisingly sensitive to temperature changes. Place a hot pan on a normal glass surface or position a standard pane too close to a gas flame, and it’s much more prone to thermal cracking.

Tempered glass, by comparison, is engineered to handle extreme heat. Properly specified toughened glass can withstand heat up to around 250°C, so it’s the only safe choice for:

  • Backsplashes behind gas or electric hobs.
  • Protective covers for radiators
  • Fireplace hearths and floor plates

Safety shattering
Glass is never completely unbreakable, despite its immense strength. If tempered glass does break, it’s designed to crumble into lots of small, blunt-edged pieces.

That safer break pattern makes it well-suited to ‘human impact’ areas across the home.

Bespoke Range

Ideal for smaller, DIY projects

Not every home improvement needs a four-figure budget. Toughened Glass Direct is built around small, made-to-measure panels.

Our impact-resistant glass offers the type of upgrade that you can fit into a weekend, and because you’re buying direct, you can get custom sizes without paying a premium for oversized minimum orders.

Application 1: Table protectors
Solid wood furniture is beautiful, but vulnerable.

If you’ve got a coffee table or dining table that’s picking up scratches, water rings, and heat marks, a custom-cut toughened glass topper acts like a shield.

You’ll still see the wood grain beneath, but the surface becomes heat-resistant and impossible to scratch.

Application 2: Shelving
Toughened glass shelves are designed for alcoves or awkward corners – you’ll find them in kitchens and bathrooms, where they’re in deep cupboards or shower niches.

Create them using toughened glass, and they can safely hold heavy shampoo bottles or decorative items without worry.

Application 3: Greenhouse/Garden Replacements
Worried about kids, pets, or windy weather?

Horticultural glass is famously brittle and breaks at the slightest impact. Replace broken panes with toughened safety glass – it’s a much safer, more durable alternative that won’t shatter into large shards.

Thickness
Thickness mainly affects rigidity and durability:

4mm: For lightweight pieces – the standard choice for greenhouse repairs, garden shed windows, or tabletop covers.

6mm: An all-rounder for splashbacks and small shelves. It offers substantial strength but isn’t overly heavy.

10mm: Best when you want a more substantial, premium feel – we recommend this for larger freestanding shelves or dining table tops.

Edge finishes
Your toughened glass can be finished in a way that feels safe for everyday handling:

Polished edges: The edges are ground and polished smooth; they’re safe to touch when left exposed (common for shelves, table protectors, and decorative panels).

Radius corners: Corners are gently rounded to remove sharp points – it’s especially useful for tabletops, shelves, and other areas people may brush past.

Clarity and colour
Choose the visual finish:

Standard clear: The industry standard – it has excellent clarity, though if you look closely at the edge, you’ll see a slight natural green tint (caused by iron content).

Low iron (Ultra-clear): For absolute transparency, choose low iron. Made with reduced iron content for higher clarity and less green tint, it’s great for an ‘invisible finish’.

Tinted (bronze or grey): Looking for something more aesthetic? Our transparent tinted glass reduces glare and is great for shelves and furniture-style projects.

Your Questions, Answered

Tempered glass is a single sheet that’s been heat-treated to increase its strength four or five times that of annealed glass. Laminated glass is made from multiple sheets bonded together with a clear plastic interlayer. If it breaks, the glass tends to crack but stay held together by the interlayer.

Most of the time, it looks almost identical to float/annealed glass.

However, because toughened glass has internal stress from the tempering process, you may notice subtle effects under certain lighting, such as slight optical distortion (roller wave) or faint patterns (anisotropy).

It depends on whether you’re using glass as a protector (on top of an existing table) or as the table surface itself.
